Managing Trade in a Complex Environment


This half-day training session will provide an overview of international trade-related issues that impact your business and address key changes in Canada’s trading environment and the risks and opportunities. The topics will include:


  • Session One: Trade Law Basics:
    • Who is liable for trade compliance? The concepts of “Importer of Record” and “Exporter of Record”, Incoterms and other contractual clauses
    • What are the key obligations? Customs basics including tariff classification, origin and valuation of imported goods
    • What are the monetary implications? Import duties, tax and customs audits.
  • Session Two: Canada’s Free Trade Agreements:
    • What does NAFTA really do for cross border trade and how might my business be impacted if it did not exist?
    • How does the USMCA compare to NAFTA and what are the timelines for its potential adoption and implementation?
    • What are the opportunities created by new agreements, including the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)?
  • Session Three: Current Issues in Trade:
    • Living in an age of “managed trade”: the U.S. 232 and 301 tariffs, retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada, and risks and opportunities for importers and exporters and their business partners.
